The Impact of Approximately 0%

You might think: wow I’m 1 out of 7,500,000,000+ people. That’s approximately 0%. In the midst of global crises, it seems as if the impact you can make is roughly 0%. Great. :/


I feel. Cupertino is only one city that I lobbied to push from stronger climate policies, Cupertino High school was the one school where I contributed to the environmental club, my family only consists of 3 other people. 


But what if because there are so many people there is the possibility that there is at least one that shares some of your views? What you care about? They might not be apparent. They might be hiding what they care about because they believed the world didn’t care (that was me for a while to some people). But they are there. Or maybe they’re your role model but only if you’ve heard about them. The fact that there are so many people means that there inevitably means that there are people who care about making the changes in the world you care about. 


Someone once told me that the impact you make is like a dandelion. It starts out with a single seed then spreads to a field. Imagine a field with hundreds of dandelions. Thousands of dandelions. Millions of dandelions each representing someone else trying to make a positive impact on the world.

  Why might we be so mean to ourselves? I like to think that I am accepting and forgiving of others , and that I make an effort to understand the challenges others face, yet my own inner critic is quite harsh. It seems to be a common experience, but why do we engage in such self-sabotage? My hypothesis is that my inner critic is driven by how I feel about how society judges me.   I see people be mean to each other on social media. I recall my parents’ harsh reprimandings in their attempts to make me a better person. I hear gossip. You Can Be Your Best Friend

Dad: I’m afraid that you’re going to be lonely living at grad student housing as an undergrad.  What I should’ve responded: my best friend is going to live here. They can completely empathize with me and will always make time for me. We will be spending a lot of time together. That person is me.  I realize that this above statement can sound extremely sad since loneliness and not having friends (besides yourself) in general can suck a lot. I’ve been there myself. However, I can’t force people to spend time with me. Realizing that I’m always going to be there for myself and can enjoy my own company can be incredibly freeing. If I can enjoy being with myself, I don’t need to be afraid of being lonely. Wouldn’t this ultimately free me from loneliness? Ironically, this post was inspired by my recent conversations with friends and other nice people. I’ll keep them anonymous in case they like being anonymous.

Why Not Reach Out?

 I am not worthy of A's time. It would be a waste of time to apply to MIT because I'm not good enough to get in.  Doubts of my worthiness cloud my judgement, holding me back. MIT (miraculously) accepted me. A has been proactively calling me recently.  It is not up to me to decide that I am not good enough for MIT—it's MIT's decision. It is not up to me to decide that I am not good enough for A—it's A's decision.  What is it that you feel unworthy of that is holding you back?
